The Great Unwatched: Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985)

Part of: Friday the 13th: From Crystal Lake to Manhattan box set

Director: Danny Steinmann

Runtime: 92 minutes

I think I'm beginning to see the appeal behind the slasher genre. It's not that the films are particularly noteworthy in and of themselves so much as they're comforting. For your money, you get a fairly strict structure (kids do stupid things, maniac kills them) that challenges filmmakers to make the required parts more and more outrageous in order to maintain audience attention. If you ignore the plot (typically idiotic) and character "development" (rudimentary and telegraphed), you can focus on the real draw: creative special effects. The 1980s were like a buffet of proof-of-concepts of better ways to fake killing somebody.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning boasts the highest "kill count" of the series; some are very inventive and others are rote. Most of the effects involved are well-executed, but there are a few instances here and there where they get ridiculously cheesy (the most unconvincing throat slitting in cinema, for instance). The movie really doesn't suffer for the fact that the rampaging psycho is a Jason Voorhees copycat and not the "real" Crystal Lake killer. Personally, I don't understand the vitriol directed at this entry. It's not really any better or worse than its immediate predecessor, The Final Chapter (how's that for a misnomer?). If you want a bunch of people playing pretendy-fun-dead, some amount of gore, and the standard quota of naked breasts for an R-rated film from the mid-1980s, the fifth Friday film isn't a terrible way to go.

Worth the purchase: Worth seeing at least once, but I probably should've just Netflixed it.

Behind Already

Managed to watch about one-third of Friday the 13th: A New Beginning last night before my girlfriend and I headed off to do Pub Quiz at the George and Dragon with some of my friends from work. When she and I came home, we were both pretty tired (and she's not a fan of horror), so we ended up watching an episode of Dark Angel before crashing.

I figure if I watch finish the Friday flick tonight and watch another four over the weekend, I should be back on track.

The Great Unwatched: Pick-up (1975)

Part of: The Exploitation Cinema Collection (20 Films)

Director: Bernard Hirschenson

Runtime: 78 minutes

Part of the point behind this project was to teach myself a lesson, specifically that I don't really need to buy every single DVD or DVD box set that looks like a bargain. Given that goal, Pick-up was an excellent way to start off, since it's pretty lousy. A goofy-looking guy picks up two female hitchhikers -- one all sexual va-va-voom and the other morose. The three of them get stranded in a swamp, where they proceed to run around, have sex (sometimes on a swing!), and hallucinate about clowns, politicians, and priestesses of Apollo. I think this was somebody's idea of making a trippy movie, but somehow they failed to take into account things like maintaining a consistency of internal reality and, oh, entertainment value. There's a couple of really painful flashbacks (including one involving child molestation by a priest) to break up the trippiness and a nastily misogynistic sequence toward the end. If the other nineteen films in this set at this same level of quality, I may have wasted twenty bucks.

Worth the Purchase: Hardly.

Stats: 1/403 movies watched in 1 day.
Currently projected end-time is April 5th, 2010.
Goal for end-time is February 25th, 2010.

The Great Unwatched: The List

Below is the list of movies in my DVD collection that I still haven't seen. My goal, starting at 7:30 PM MST on February 25, 2009, is to watch all of them in a one-year period. Foolhardy? Perhaps. But it promises to be an interesting ride.

The list has been re-ordered randomly and broken up into monthly chunks, so that I don't burn out the list of "really need to see" movies early.

One grudging note: this isn't absolutely complete. For the sake of sanity, I left out films in both my 50-movie and 100-movie Horror Classics megasets. The quality in those sets is bad enough that I really only keep them around for reference.
